Changes to Section J

2016 marks the start of a new 3 year amendment cycle for the Building Code of Australia after previously following a yearly cycle.

The NCC/BCA2016 has changed very little from the 2015 Code.

The amendments are two-fold:

  • slab edge insulation is now required for Class 2-9 buildings in order to improve thermal performance (JV3(g)(ii)(C))
  • an exemption can be obtained where loss of ceiling insulation results from fan or down lights by using house energy rating software (J0.2(d))

Three years ago Section J was forecast to get tougher (see previous item). However, the proposed changes were not widely accepted when they came out in draft form. After extensive consultation the code re-draft swung back to the status quo and only included two small changes noted above.
