J1V3 (formerly JV3) Assessment and Reports

J1V3 Assessment for Your Building

The J1V3 Verification Method can show that a new building meets the energy efficiency requirements of the National Construction Code (NCC).

Energy efficiency compliance may be done via either or both the Deemed-to-Satisfy (DTS) Solution or the Performance Solution, for which a J1V3 assessment is performed. A J1V3 report will typically include:

Building Information

Building energy model

Energy performance comparison

Thermal Comfort Assessment (PMV)

Verification report

Choosing an Energy Efficiency Compliance Path

A J1V3 assessment is good for complex building designs and where maximum energy efficiency is desired. Here is a quick comparison between the Performance Solution (using J1V3) and the DTS solution:

Performance Solution DTS Solution
Potential for energy savings Can offer greater energy savings May not be as energy efficient as a PS solution
Complexity More complex Easy to use
Cost More expensive Less expensive
Flexibility More flexibility Less flexible

The decision on which path to take will have to be made on a case-by-case basis,
considering all the factors involved.

J1V3 modelling has three primary advantages:

It can help you design a more energy efficient building, resulting in energy bill savings and reduced environmental impact.

It can decrease construction costs when you select more efficient materials and systems.

It can improve comfort for building occupants, which can then lead to improved productivity.

The J1V3 Assessment Process

A qualified energy consultant will generally follow this prescribed flow in developing a Performance Solution using the J1V3 method:

1. Develop Design Brief

2. Carry Out Analysis

3. Evaluate Results

4. Prepare Final Report

Expert J1V3 Assessment Support

If you have questions about J1V3 modelling or if you need assistance with conducting a J1V3 assessment or certifications like Green Star, Application Solutions is always ready to provide support.

A J1V3 assessment (formally JV3) is an alternative method of demonstrating compliance with the energy efficiency requirements of the Building Code of Australia (BCA). It is a typical assessment used under the Performance Solution method of compliance with the energy efficiency provisions of the National Construction Code (NCC). The Performance Solution allows for greater design flexibility than the standard Deemed-to-Satisfy (DTS) method, while still ensuring that buildings meet minimum energy efficiency standards.

You may use the J1V3 Performance Solution method when:

  • You have a Class 3 or 5-9 building, or common area of Class 2 building that is required to comply with Section J of the BCA
  • Your building’s design is too complex to comply with the DTS requirements
  • You want more flexibility with regards to design choices

The benefits of a J1V3 assessment include:

  • Greater design flexibility
  • Ability to create a more tailored thermal performance assessment of a building
  • Reduced construction costs
  • Improved occupant comfort

J1V3 reports are not mandatory for all building approvals. However, if a J1V3 assessment is required to demonstrate compliance with the BCA, then a J1V3 Performance Solution report is required

The primary requirements for a J1V3 assessment are building information details to create an accurate 3D model of the building. A stakeholder signed Performance Based Design Brief setting out the objectives of the Performance Solution is also a BCA mandatory requirement.

Any suitably qualified energy assessor, consultant, or engineer can perform a J1V3 assessment. Get in touch with the team at Application Solutions for help.
